Manual tranny pops out of gear
I have a 91 2wd p/u with 170k. The transmission pops out of 1st unless I hold it in, and wont even stay engaged in 3rd when I release the clutch. However, 5th gear operation is ok, as well as the other gears. I am about due for a clutch and would like to tackle this issue while I have the tranny off. Any suggestions as to what it could be, or what to inspect for a probable cause? I am a bit stumped since, like most mechanics, I am more familiar with the internals of automatic trannys since manuals hardly ever break, LOL.

Thanks for the tip. Are those plastic pieces part of the shifter mechanism or are they located inside the trans. case? |

Re: Manual tranny pops out of gear
thats it, and a little greese between the shifter ball and seat. i choose to remove to shifter housing (4 bolts) to avoid getting bits of the crumbled seat into the tranny.

I am having the same problem! It wont stay in any gear unless i hold it in. If it does popout and I try to put it back in it also makes a grinding noise some times. Is the replacement something that can be done by somone with pretty much no knowledge?

wont stay in gear
Hi All .. First post here... looks like a great place with good information and help !!
Anyway.. I have an 89 Toyota 4x4 ext cab pickup with a 22re. This is a GREAT truck and I am new to Toyota.. I also have a 02 Duramax for pulling a horse trailer around... etc..... I primarily use the Toyota for hunting and off road stuff... its in great shape and I would expect it has had an engine replaced and maybe tranny too.. as it has 224,000 miles on the odometer but runs like it was brand new.. and the previous owner (second owner) documented ALL repairs in three repair manuals he had... Anyway.. I have stated to notice this issue.. If I'm a low RPM it will fall out of third gear .. if RPMs are up no problem staying in gear.. occassionaly 4th will do this also... I have called the Toyota dealer and they have the seat and bushing in stock so I will give that a try.. is there anything else I should look for ?? And does anyone know if I must remove the carpet to remove the shift lever ?? thanks for any help ! And I really do dig this little truck ! --Steve Las Cruces, NM |

So, I was having the exact same problem and I went to purchase these parts, pulled out the shifter, removed all the peices of the old seat, put in a new one, changed the bushing, put everything back together...
And it still does the EXACT same thing. Any clue what could be wrong? How does this seat cause this problem? |

Re: Manual tranny pops out of gear
thank you very much for the useful info.
I replaced the shift lever seat and solved the problem with it popping out of gear. the hardest thing was getting the damn shift boot and plate back in !! btw this is the part number I used : 33505-35020 and got it from drivetrain.com

Re: Manual tranny pops out of gear
I replaced those parts and he shifter feels better, but it still pops out of first. I'll be car shopping this weekend. I'll replace the tranny when I have some free time.
