not getting what i thought i would

hey guys, i installed two 5x7 infinity kappas and two 6.5" infinity kappas powered by an Infinity Reference 7540a amp at 111w x 4 amp. (yeah ended up with all infinity stuff, weird) and after i've got it all hooked up, i'm kinda disappointed at the levels it starts to distort at. i wasn't expecting such a drop off for 5x7 compared to 6x9's but did i just overestimate them? also, the 6.5" have very little low end, i wasn't expecting a ton but more than what i'm getting. anything you can think of that i might be doing wrong? thanks for any help

Re: not getting what i thought i would

nope, welcome to the lovely life of infinity speakers, harsh highs and no lows

you could deaden your doors a bit to help, but you aren't going to get any amazing results unless you change the speakers to something else (even if it costs the same amount, as long as it's not infinity), sorry.

Yeah, Infinity systems aren't like they use to be. I would double check that you have not wired any speakers out of phase. Also, make sure the front of the cone is completely isolated from the rear of the cone. If not, you have some of the sound frequencies being cancelled. That's why a sub sounds like crap if you hold it in your hand but as soon as it is dropped into a enclosure, BINGO

Re: not getting what i thought i would

and about the 5x7s/6x8s.. ive heard several.. and trust me they definately dont come close to 6x9s.. maybe just by design they suck... i dont know but either way trust me.. it could be worse.. be glad you didnt buy the sony 5x7s that i did a while back. the tweets are harsher than the infinitys' and the bass destorts even quicker. and be glad you at least have 6.5s up front, i am stuck with 5x7s/6x8s all around.

may consider giving up on those speakers and buying a sub to cover the bass. ha thats what im doin.

Re: not getting what i thought i would

check into some CDT components, RE components, MB quarts off ebay or something along those lines and replace the infinities. Also if you want lows ya gotta get a sub there are very few midbass drivers that can have any kind of decent output below 50-60hz

Re: not getting what i thought i would

it's not that i want a ton of bass, i dont think my neighbors would appreciate that too much, but it's just that i've heard stock systems get this loud. my girlfriend's brother put some JL 6x9's in her jeep and i'm thinking that is along the lines of where i want to be. problem is that a 92 taurus takes 6x8's so i dont know how much extra trouble it would be to get the 6x9's in, maybe mount them in a box and mount those in the back? would a shop put them in for a decent price? thanks again for the replies
