Turn signals working, brake light on the deck working, brake lights in tail light not working, any recommendations besides fuse/bulbs? Thanks...James

Re: 87 Grand Marquis Brake Lights

I'd check for a short somewhere, or it could be the multifunction switch (turn signals, high beams, etc) on the steering column.

I have a 88 Grand Marquis that has the same problem. Brake on deck lid, turn signals and 4-way flashers work fine but no brake lights in the 2 tail lights. Brake light switch is good as the deck brake light comes on fine. Fuses in the inside fuse panel are good. Would like to know if you fixed your brake light problem and what you found out. Also could use help from anyone who has a knowledge of this problem
Thanks

The deck brake light is on a seperate circuit from the other stoplights. This light can work and the stoplights may not. The stop lamp switch provides voltage for both circuits.
For the actual stop lights themselves, power goes from the stop lamp switch to the turn signal or mult-function switch. There are many circuits inside the multi-function switch that affect each function seperately.
Check the connections on the switch or you may need a wiring diagram to trace power. Could swap in another switch from the boneyard?

Why did you buy a $40K vehicle and not a $100 Factory Service Manual?

Re: 87 Grand Marquis Brake Lights

Is there a place online to view wiring diagrams? I was reading the owners manual and think there maybe a relay for the brake lights (trailer towing). I wiggled the connecting plugs on the 3 relays located on the left fender wheel well and they are working now! Would like to know if there is a relay for the brake lights and where it is located.

Aaaah...trailer towing throws another optional circuit in the picture.

Re: 87 Grand Marquis Brake Lights

Thanks for the wiring diagram! I typed and posted a reply a few minutes ago but don't see it here! I am the only owner of this car and have never pulled a trailer or wired up for one. When looking in the owners manual at the brake light fuse, next to it it has "(trailer towing)". That is why I got on that track.
