|
Cellulose thinner on plastic
I want to use the 'touch-up' auto paints, from halfords UK, in my airbrush. For this i will need to thin them with cellulose thinner and i wanted to find out if anyone knows if it will affect the plastic??? Obviously it wont if i use the correct primer but the thing is, its the primer i wont to spray from my airbrush too.

Are the Halfords paints cellulose? I am not sure!
Cellulose will kill plastic quicker than you can imagine! Just use the Halfords plastic primer though and you will be fine! Unless you are using metalics, I wouldn't bother with the airbrush, the results from those cans is superb! Look at my Calsonic R33 for proof!

Yes. the halfords paints are cellulose. I know the cans are superb, ive used them for a few years now but the problem i have with them is the huge amount of dust they create. I have a bathroom extractor fan at the top of my spray booth which i have in the shed but the fan will hardly get rid of the overspray. Its become very annoying and i know that if i was able to airbrush those paints my dust problem will not be as bad.
Guiddy - do use the 'plastic primer' then? Ive always used the normal 'grey' or 'white' primer which is fine and doesnt attack the plastic. it comes in the large 500ml cans too. Do u have the same problems with overspray? Also have u ever experienced problems with tiny specs of paint coming out of the can? I think it might be due to the cans sitting around too long, its happened to me twice now and i shake the cans more than enough. Is it possible for a small amount of the paint to dry in these???

Not using the plastic primer led to some paints cracking, though it doesn't happen with any of Halfords own paint, only when I used Lesanol basecoat. But now I use the plastic primer for all bodywork just to be safe!
I know what you mean about the dust, but I spray in the garage so it doesn't matter too much! I too have had the 'bits' in the paint! I found it didn't happen if I shook it longer and heated the can!

I always heat the can too, i guess i will just have to shake the damn thing longer and harder! thanks.
