Question 1991 Engine Noise

I have 2 1991 Geo metros. One of them has 200k on it and the other has 89k on it. they both make the same noise. It quiets after it warms up but is still noticeable. It sounds like the noise is on the top side. It almost sounds like a knocking rod but the noise doesn't get any worse. Therefore I have ruled out a rod, rods get worse. It sounds like lifter noise. I was wanting to know how to get rid of the lifter noise without having to tear down the engine.

Also, does anyone know if they make an overdrive auto for the metros?

Metros by nature have noisy lifters. What weight oil are you using?

I am running Valvoline 20w 50 with lucas oil stabilazer. The Stabalizer quiets it down quite a bit. However it is still noisy.

Wow...I always thought that was a I am running 10w40 in my 96 with 160K on it. There is some lifter noise but I would be afraid to go that thick. I wonder what would be correct?

I have ran 20w in my metro before and had no prob's. The only thing that I can tell is that mine lost a mile per gallon, 49 instead of 50. But of course that's not really enough to call it a loss.

The proper oil weight for the G10 and G13 is 5w20.

Re: 1991 Engine Noise

I think I'll be safe with what I run as long as I keep oil in it

I'd go with 10w30 at the heaviest!! Your engine head is running dry! That's why it's making noise. Your camshaft is gonna get worn down, and your lifters aren't properly adjusting. I bet even when it's warm, when you get off the freeway, it ticks for a minute from all the high RPM's.
