1995 5spd to auto modification
I have a 1995 F150, 300cui, with 5 spd.
I am considering a tranny change to better pull a boat. Has someone here done this and if so, any large problems? Lee |

Re: 1995 5spd to auto modification
I have never done this, but it seems like a huge undertaking. I can imagine that it would be easier to go from a man. to and auto., but wonder if its really worth it. It could be done, but I would consider living with the stick or looking for another truck that already is an automatic.

Re: Re: 1995 5spd to auto modification
Well, remove old tranny from the flywheel back, install torque converter/tranny/drive shaft, aftermarket shifter. Only problem is tranny fluid cooling lines to radiator. I wonder if an air cooled oil cooler is good enough.
I would not consider this if the aluminum standard thats there was as tough as the auto is considered to be. Buy another truck???? NEVER!!! I raised this one from a puppy ;-) Lee Quote:

Re: 1995 5spd to auto modification
You might want to consider what tranny you plan on puttin IN. I don't mean to burst your bubble but the E4's aren't exactly know for their stoutness...

Re: Re: 1995 5spd to auto modification
what tranny would you recommend for towing? The owners manual shows the auto is rated to tow more. I would look for an old cast iron 3spd w/granny, but since the clutch pedal is hydralic, the old linkage is a problem.

Re: 1995 5spd to auto modification
A C-6 will work, and if not already damaged, it would likely last a lifetime. They are power hungry beasts though, so you will lose some fuel economy. OTOH, you can run 3.08 or 3.27 gears with a C-6 if the cooler is big enough.
An air-to-oil ATF cooler is just fine, make sure its is big enough. |
