Please help

I have a 96 escort wagon (automatic) and I cannot get it out of park. I checked all the fuses and they are fine. I pushed the shiftlock override switch and it still won't shift. I have also been having problems with my back lights on the left side. All the bulbs keep blowing when I change them but, don't know if this is somehow related to me being stuck in park or not. Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The thread "Will not come out of park" dated 1-18-2005 by thread starter oldmanneedshelp has 2 good suggestions about how to get your car out of park. If your car is parked on an incline your pawl in your transmission may be hanging up. Rock the car while trying to shift out of park. You have to push the brake pedal and actuate the stop light to get the car out of park. You mention you are having trouble with your lights in back. If your stop light is not working you can't shift out of park. Check bulbs and fuses.

Hey I had this same problem. Ended up finding that the wires going into your hatch on that rubber sleeve were freyed and torn. Just needed to butt connect them and everything was fine.
