Boost gauge, Red wire where?

I didn't want to admit in the title that the brand of gauge is Greddy... mmm rice...

It's an electronic gauge, and I'm at the point of wiring it to electrical stuff. Instead of there being two wires to a bulb with a mechanical gauge, like the vdo/autometer gauges covered by rre/vfaq, I have five wires- Red (12v), Black (Ground), Orange (Ignition), White (Lights), and Yellow (Accessory). I don't have a turbo timer to splice into. I think the yellow wire is optional.

If I hook stuff up to the dimmer switch, I'm going to have (I think) more of an electrical load than a small lightbulb, like some other gauges. Since I don't know if that's a good idea, I've been thinking about the cig lighter. Do I attach the red/orange/white wires all to the center wire of the cig lighter? One of the vfaq writeups, prostreet, seems to have a similar gauge, but I don't know where the fucking red wire is supposed to go if I follow the rest of their instruction.

Is the color coding of the Greddy wires universal? I mean, can I put my red wire with any red wire, etc.? I read about using the fuse box. Which wire goes there?

Thanks

if red goes to the cig lighter, you wont need to tap the yellow or the orange into anything. the cig lighter is connected to the aux & dimmer on the car so it wont come on when the car is shut off. if you have an aftermarket allarm, you can wire the yellow wire to the aux output on your alarm and your boost gauge will light up when the lights flash.

Check this website out. Gives awesome step by step directions with pictures. It helped me install my boost gauge perfectly on my 1g. I'm sure you will find it helpful. Good luck..

Aright... my garage is below zero. It's cold. I took off my center console and my cigarette lighter wasn't attached to anything on the back. No wires. There was one loose light bulb connected by one black and one green wire, but that was all the excitement I found.

BTW, the plymouthlaser site was what I was using, and I agree, it is a great site. The guy is very methodical. I was restripping the green wire on the dimmer, and I accidentally snapped it in two. Electrical tape solved that, but it isn't pretty. I tried the red wire on green, and black on black. The gauge flashed a single red light when the lights were turned on, but didn't get backlit or dim with the gauges.

Now I have the red wire in the bottom right fuse and I'll ground the black one to see if that works, once I warm up.

Re: Boost gauge, Red wire where?

tap the ground to the black wire using a tap connector, and do the same with the red power wire from your gauge to the green & white wire you mentioned. you'll be setup on the dimmer for your lights. thats all you have to do.

The fuse thing didn't work. I reattached the leads how I had them before, how scottsee said. The dash lights work, the gauge doesn't do anything. When I start the car, the stock boost gauge reads high at idle. My gauge still doesn't budge. Car stutters when it starts, idles high, probably because the car acts like it's getting more air than it is, judging by the stock boost gauge. The cut I made on the vacuum hose, and the y-fitting look fine.

After thinking about this, I've come to the conclusion of Fuck This Shit. I'll pay an overpriced tuner shop an arm and a leg to do a halfassed job that'll still be better than mine. Or I'll bribe someone on this forum to come do it, haha. Or I'll shoulder-tap and bribe Kevin with a case of Heiniken.

I'm glad I bought the gauge used, glad I didn't spend more than I already have on tuner parts. I'm re-enrolling in school in three days. Fuck Cars.
