zc cams in d16a1 head

i have a d16a1 and a zc head. the only problem is my zc head has 2 bent intake valves. for now i was going to put my d16a1 head on my zc block. i was wanting to put my zc cams in my d16a1 head. would i have to put the pg6 (d16a1) cam gears on the zc cams to use my d16a1 timing belt. if i have to use the pg6 cam gears would i have to also use the d16a1 crank timing gear.

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

Count the teeth on the cam gears and make sure they are the same first. I've never dealt with a ZC, but I'm pretty sure they are identical to the A1 except the compression is higher.

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

NO they are not the same and will not work correctly if just swapped. and if you use the zc cams you have to use adjustable cam gears because the zc cams are ground differently than the d16a1's. there is like a 4 degree difference between the 2. do a google search on it. there was a guy that had a site that did it with pics and a great write up and it didnt work. he had to go through more trouble than it was worth to get it done. i have the site at home i will post it up later or tommorow.

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

so i just cant put the d16a1 cam gears on the zc cams. Looks like ill just have to wait to get my head regrinded. I might just really hold off on it and get all new retainers and springs. Have a real nice head by the end of summer

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

damnit i forgot the site name at home again...tommorow. anyways no you cant just swap the gears, its the cams that are ground different. and then if you still want to use the zc cams and adj gears you have to re-mark the gears to reflect TDC cause there off too...its a big hassle. just buy some aftermarket cams for the d16a1. by the way did you get the head on the zc block yet? how did it bolt up?

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

yea mine bolted up. I have heard that the 86 and 87 heads will only bolt up to a 86-87 block and the 88-89 heads will only bolt to the 88-89 blocks but im not to sure i just know that mine worked and im happy. Should be in by the end of this weekend ill post pics of it when its done.

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

yea zc is just the engine code i dont know if it really stands for anything. So what year d16a1 head did you bolt on to your zc block? your zc was a direct bolt in into your crx right? guess ill just have to compare an 88-89 head gasket to my 87 head.
is the d16a1 head vacumn advance distributer or electronic?

Re: zc cams in d16a1 head

i found one modification that i had to make to the motor mount and as for the years im not sure i just know that it worked but im not 100% percent about the year differences. as for the mod i had to do to get it to work i had to grind down the motor mount http://files.automotiveforums.com/ga...?ppuser=264001
