HELP!! 92 legend auto tranny problem/noise

unpredictable, occasional roaring noise from tranny area, usually
when cruising around 50 and letting off gas...dealer thinks it might
be bearings...if so how long before i have to replace tranny...right
now just the occasional noise...no other performance symptoms...
any other repair options??
