Am I getting ripped off?

My 1997 chevy cavalier randomly will not start. It acts like it is going to, but then it just doesn't. It usually does this when it's cold and/or wet outside. I've taken it in twice before and have been told nothing is wrong with it. It is in the shop now and they said the wires and plugs need to be replaced, and the fuel body needs cleaned to fix the problem. It's going to cost around $300 for everything. Does this sound like a legitimate repair? and is this a resonable price?

Re: Am I getting ripped off?

Hard to say based on the info given. Could be. But I kind of doubt it.

It could be the plug wires, if you're driving a 2.2L.

If I were you, I'd first change the wires. Do it yourself if you're comfortable with it.

I don't know what a fuel body is. Do you mean throttle body or fuel filter? Your info is not clear. Is it turning over or does it just click when you turn the key?

It's definately not the throttle body. You can clean that yourself. They'll always say the fuel filter. It's not that.

The engine turns over, and all the lights and everything come on, but the car does not start. As for the fuel body, I don't know much about cars, so I'm not sure what that is either, but it is exactly what the mechanic called it.

Re: Am I getting ripped off?

Sounds like you may want a different mechanic.

I agree. Good call posting the question.

I'd get the car out of there if possible.

yeah straight away he's trying it on! It sounds like he's said something that doesn't exist to test your knowledge and see how much he can rip you off!!!!! If you do the sparks plugs and leads yourself (not hard at all) only do one at a time!!!

wow... ive never heard of a fuel body before lol He probably IS talking about the throttle body, its kind of like some people from different regions of the country call things different names. for example, I hear people call an upper intake manifold a Plenium all the time. it just depends where youre from, or i could be wrong and hes a scammer whats trying to rip you off lol

The plenum feeds the manifold!
