Have 99 Civic EX with 73,000. On cold start, there is a slight knocking sound coming from engine for about a couple of minutes. Once the car is wormed up, it performes flowless. In addition, when fuel tank gets empty, It takes longer to start. Fuel filter was changed and problem persists. I will appreciate any suggestions. Thanks much.

I have a 99 and it does both of the things you have mentioned. I'm not worried about it. The knocking is probably because our oil is in a less liquefied state thus having more friction then there is supposed to be. And yes... When its about a quarter tank its a bit harder to start. I don't know what else to tell you. My suggestion is... Rock on!

Re: engine knocking sound at cold start
Thanks for your answer. This is what my mechanic said. Also suggested to change oil first. I think that the guys who changed it before put thicker one and that is why is knocking indistinctively at start. Anyway, thanks for your reply. Drive safe.

Re: engine knocking sound at cold start
The knocking sound is because your engine had no oil when it was cold. That is why the mechanic told you to change the oil...use a 5w30 oil or a 0w30 depending on how cold it is.
