Turbos

I have 1992 dodge stealth tt. It has 61,000 miles on it. Is there anyway to see if the turbos are in good shape. They work fine but how can I tell if they will last me some time. Will they just break instantly or wil it be a slow process?

most of the stock turbos usually last over 100K miles. You will know when they are going bad, by, #1, they start burning oil from bad seals, or #2, you will hear the famous turbo "whine" of death which means they have soo much shaft play that they are scraping against the cast metal of the turbo.

probably the easiest way to do so is to take off the intake pipe into your turbo, and wiggle the compressor wheel around and see how much it moves. Remember, shaft play is usually only a couple of mm at most so dont try to break your compressor wheel. Also, by all means, make sure your engine is completely off when doing so. I had a friend of mine with a huge turbo on his Galant VR-4, and he had his finger in the compressor housing where the intake pipe connects to it, and he was testing his car, blipped his throttle, and his middle finger got caught and the turbo just sliced his middle finger up to where the fingernail hits the skin, right off.
