94 caravan 3.0\ A604 trans shift problems

I have a 94 caravan with the A604 trans and this thing shifts when it want to. the fluid has been changed along with the gasket and the screen. They used that new fluid special for chrysler in it so i know thats not it. I can however shut the van off and it shifts good for a while but a few minutes later it stops again and i have to shut it off and restart. Could this be the speed sensor? Or maybe a shorted wire? Any ideas are welcome cuz i'm lost..lol

That does not give me a warm fuzzy. Was it a Dodge dealer? What exact fluid went in vs. what exact fluid did your transmission call for? My gues is your transmission wants Mopar 7176 - why put in anything else?

You may also have an electrical problem - sensor, ECM, etc. A few more details may help. ie Shifts from 1-2, downshifts from 3rd to second, goes into limp mode, etc.

I called the guy i got it from and he said that autozone told him to use ATF + 3 for the A604. when you first start out it shifts good it just seems to be dragging then it shifts itno limp mode. and when you restart it its shifting good again but dragging. Does that help?

Sounds a lot like a speed sensor. Spent a month with my 92 having to put it in nuetral while going down the road and turning the key off then on to reset. Feared the worst, but my honest mechanic showed me the code reader that confirmed a faulty speed sensor. $15 I think for the part and all set. Hope it's the same for you.

When you had the fluid changed, did they tell you if it had metal shavings in it? Hope not.

By the way, ATF+3 is fine!

DISCUSSION:

A new transmission fluid (ATF+4(R) - Type 9602) has been developed and is being used as factory fill for all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions. Until now, vehicles originally filled with ATF+2 or ATF+3 were to be serviced with ATF+3. Effective immediately, it is recommended that all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions except for 1999 and earlier minivans be serviced with ATF+4(R). ATF+3 should continue to be used for 1999 and earlier minivans because of the potential for torque converter shudder during break in. For all other applications the ATF+4(R) fluid offers significant benefits as outlined below.
NOTE :ATF+4(R) MUST ALWAYS BE USED IN VEHICLES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY FILLED WITH ATF+4(R).

NOTE :SERVICE INTERVALS DO NOT CHANGE. THE SERVICE INTERVAL CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FOR A GIVEN VEHICLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE FOLLOWED.

NOTE :ATF+4(R) IS COMPATIBLE WITH ATF+3 AND CAN BE USED TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT CURRENTLY HAVE ATF+2 OR ATF+3. DO NOT USE ATF+2 OR ATF+3 TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT HAVE ATF+4(R) FLUID.

FLUID COLOR

Mopar ATF+4(R) is a World Class Fluid having exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4°R is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not support a fluid change.

ATF + 3 is fine for a 96 Caravan, if it's Mopar ATF + 3. Don't believe the autozone guy when he says the other brands are just as good. I never buy anything from the dealer if I can avoid it, but I buy my transmission fluid from the Dodge dealer only. The extra couple of bucks I pay there saves me thousands in transmission repair.

pls. check the solenoid box near transmission,bec. it's happen to me that before.
