Unhappy Help Please?

Hey all.
I'm pretty much a fruit cake when it comes to cars... I have a 92 mx-3 that has been serving as a lawn ornament. Last week I replaced the head gasket and radiator. Now the car won't start, it makes a clunking type sound when the engine turns over... I was told that it could be the timing belt or chain or something along those lines...If it were the timing belt needing to be reset would it make a clunky sound? Or should I just go about replacing the whole engine? If I replace the engine I am not going after standard, so what should I look for, I don't want to get ripped off because I am not so swift when it comes to cars? Any direction of what to do would greatly be appreciated, thanks!
