Doing some research for a 85 4runner

I currently own an 88 4 runner. It has the 3vz-e v6 3.0 liter engine auto transmission. I was reading about the downfall of this engine as far as power and gas consumption is conserned. I am not pleased with the current power situation but the 17mpg is not bad. My dream is to purchase an 85 runner with the highly sought straight front axle. I guess I want the 22r 4 cylinder engine but am not sure if it has the power to fuel efficency ratio that would make me happy. Are there any other engine options that make sense in this truck? I am willing to make a swap. What kind of gas milage can I expect in a stock 85 runner with the 22r engine manual trans? Do those engines come with EFI? Can I increase my fuel economy with a swap without compramising too much power? What about the 3.4 liter v6 engines? anyway just looking for some advice. Thanks

Fuel injection was standard in the '85 4Runner.
