Brake problem?
This might be a easy questions for someone, but I am not really sure what the deal is. I recently had the brakes fixed on my wife's 2000 Accent(About 3 months ago). I noticed recently that when the car is being used for the first time in like 24 hours or so.. after its cooled down, and I used it the brakes just work a bit odd. At first It seems to brake normal while I am stopping at usually that first stop sign, then during the same braking period, it seems to brake harder on its own. (while I keep the same amount of pressure on the pedal) It feels like it all of a sudden catches and it brakes harder by itself. Then it stops, and doesn't do it again at all. Till the car like doesnt get driven for a while. Say 12 - 24 hours. (Its cold here in MN, and seems to have started doing it while its been cold) But it has only done it ONCE per a driving session. Its happened about a dozen times. Its weird.. anyone have any clues what might be causing it? I haven't checked the brake fluid yet, I dont know if that could cause this or not. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Brake problem?
accent huh, how many miles on it? I would have to say im not to sure of your problem but i will tell u to check a cuple things.
1 Did they turn your rotors when the brakes were done? 2 do a visual are your rotors iced up in the morning? u said it was cold and it only happens once or maybe they are oxidizing(rusting, they salt the roads out thier dont they) 3 have you checked your rear brakes? the wheel cylinders leak like a rotting wood ship in high seas on those things 4 and last it never hurts to flush out your brake fluid and its easy dot 3 actually attracts a lot of moisture and should be replaced yearly for optimum braking. let us know if this helps and the reason i ask about the milage is because the wheel cylinders may be warrentyable! |

Re: Brake problem?
check your fluid, if its low it will cause this, also check the pad wear, see the pattern in how it is wearing. this ushally tells you whats wrong. but it seems to me like the pads are just now getting into the breaking period with should have happend along time ago so i would check the above and see what is going on.

The car has 67,000 I have approx 3-4 thousand miles on the car since I had it fixed. And yeah they do salt the roads here in Minnesota. But it never did this EVER when the car was new. When its gets to at least 20+ degrees, I'll check the fluid. By the way, is there a procedure you have to use in order to check it properly? Or do you just lift the cap and look?

Re: Brake problem?
I just had my rear drums replaced. They were irreparable and had started making a knocking sound when I stopped. The brake pads at 73,000 on the back are still okay. The drums were shot though and I bought new ones and put them on. I changed the front pads about 30,000 miles ago but even then the Stealer told me I could have gotten more out of them and they are the Hyundai ones with the squeeling thing when they get low. Brakes are much more responsive now. After 5 years you don't realize it as much. Might want to check condition of your drums too. FWIW

I have changed the drums from the spindle out (spindle, bearings, cylinder, springs, pads, and new drums) on my old '83 VW Quantum, so this shouldn't be too hard. Thanks
