Cherokee Tranny
What can you guys share about the Auto tranny with OD on the 2000 Cherokees. I want to buy, but have heard that the tranny's may have problems. Also, how do you think these Jeeps rate overall for work vehicles?

Re: Cherokee Tranny
I have a '96 auto-tranny with OD, never had a lick of trouble. I keep the oil changed and it runs great. I've got 130K on it.
As for work vehicle, I suppose it depends on what you plan to do with it. The guy who had mine before I bought it was a painter, he kept all of his junk in the back and pulled a trailer. Near as I can tell, the only problem was sagging rear springs which can be replaced with Old Man Emu medium or heavy duty springs or I just installed air shocks in the back of mine. This last weekend, I had my XJ STUFFED with boy scouts and gear, with just 35psi in the shocks it didn't sag and rode great...

Re: Cherokee Tranny
Cherokees are very reliable, the trans by far is the best in the Jeep lineup, considering they are a Toyota desighn.

Re: Cherokee Tranny
I have a 00' Xj with over 97K and never had a problem. I have kept up on the mainentance with fluid changes, running Valvoline fluid. If you are going to use your XJ as a work vehicle I would strongly suggest putting on a cooler. Fairly easy to do and there is just enough room behind the grill to install it. I would say and aftermarket cooler with at least 3/8 tubes.
My Xj has been everywhere, beaches of NC to Oklahoma city. Only thing I have noticed is on long climbs through the mountians of NY if felt a little "soft" , but its been a great vehicle. These vehicles will last a long time IF you keep up on the mainentance, and don't go-cheap when getting things like oil, tranny fluid. After I bought mine I went through and drained everything! Filled the diffs with synthetic gear oil, running Castrol Synblend in the engine, and Valvoline Mercron/Dextron III inthe tranny. Oh and Mobile one Synthetic in the T-case. |

Re: Re: Cherokee Tranny
Thanks Guys! I found a XJ2000 at a dealer near here. Has 46,000. The only down side is that it has the command track TC instead of the select-track. Any thoughts on how this effects the function of the vehicle?

Re: Cherokee Tranny
I didn't think they used command-trac in 2000

The vehicle comes with a choice of two or four doors. The new 2001 model also offers a choice of two different types of four-wheel-drive systems: the part-time Command-Trac and the full-time Selec-Trac 4WD systems." Your right! Should I concentrate on looking for an 01 to make sure I get the select trac. Can a select trac be bolted to an 00 model? |

Re: Cherokee Tranny
just look for a 96-2001 with the selec-trac and call it a day
