2005 Toyota Transmission and Idle Problem? Not Sure.
Recently purchased a 2005 Toyota Tundra Single Cab with the 4.7L I-Force V-8 and a 5-speed automatic transmission. I have been experiencing the following:
1. The transmission will remain in the existing gear when the accelerator is released. Starting downhill from a dead stop and realeasing the accelerator while in low gear creates a braking effect because the transmission remains in low gear. Pressing the accelerator revs the engine and if the accelerator is held will allow the transmission to shift to second gear. The transmission will not up shift to a higher gear unless pressure to the accelerator pedal is maintained. The transmission also stays in a lower gear for an unusually long length of time without up shifting. I could not find a reference to this behavior in the owners manual and have not experienced a vehicle with this characteristic before. The dealer's service department said that this is a new type of transmission and that Toyota has informed them that they are having similiar complaints about this behavior with other Toyota vehicles equipped with this transmission. 2. The engine has a roughness at idle. This roughness happens at idle speed when in neutral or in gear. The roughness has an irregular random "bumping" feel. The engine operates very smooth when not at idle speed. The dealer's service department has not yet been able to determine the cause of this and is in touch with Toyota about the problem. I would greatly appreciate any information that could help with resolving these two items. Outside of these two items, the truck is outstanding. Thanks, GABBQMAN |

I took the holding the gear down a grade as a good thing that is featured to reduce brake imput while going downhill, especially when towing/hauling a load. I have heard other people on other sites descirbe it as the truck "braking" downhill by holding a lower gear, but applying some gas will make the truck stop this and accelerate normally. I tested this in my 05' on a hill that has 2 peaks. At the first peak at 35-40mph I release the accelerator and let the truck coast down until the bottom. I can feel the truck maintaining the speed by not upshifting. I then reapply the accelerator at the start of the 2nd hill and it easily accelerates up the hill. That is normal. Is this what you are feeling?
As far as the idle thing I feel some vibration at a stop while in gear. If I place the truck into neutral it stops. I take this as normal too. I will ask at the 1st oil change though!!! Have you had any problem with the paint chipping easily from road salt/sanding? I have. I don't want to pitch other sites but toyotanation.com has a great forum for trucks too!!!! |
