can standard beetle and super co-mingle?

will standard and super beetle parts work together or are they all pretty different? what standard beetle parts can i use on a super? and if they interchange can i still claim "original" parts for licensing? anyone?

Re: can standard beetle and super co-mingle?

motor wise aren't they basically the same? i know the front ends are pretty different. i'm thinking more along the lines of motor, and interior..i should have clarified that. other than the srtuts and such, what else are the main differences?

Re: can standard beetle and super co-mingle?

Well, officially the standard Beetle wasn't brought into the US after 1970, in 1971 it became the super. When the first gas crisis hit there was high demand for the Beetle & non-US made standard Beetles started making their way to the US again so you may see a few of these around. The super had the dual port engine while the standard had the single port. Since they are easily interchangeable you now see dual ports in standards and even vice-versa. Transmission wise you won't see a super with a swing axle as all had the IRS transmission. This also affected the read suspension. So, as long as it's a '69 or '70 (or the rare later ones)standard a few parts will interchange, but not much. Here's a site that shows alot of the various production models.

Re: can standard beetle and super co-mingle?

i know this has nothing to do with anything but.....
im in australia and i have a '67 beetle.
here all the beetles are usually over '70.
and its fairly uncommon to find anything below '60 unless you own 1 or in a club

Not true. Standards were sold in the US long after '70.

My wife had a '74 standard she bought new from the dealer.

Convertibles were all Supers after 1971, but the hard top and sunroof Standards remained available until 1978.

Re: can standard beetle and super co-mingle?

You are correct, I see so few that I forgot about them. Here on the East coast I can't think of a single example of a '71 to '73 standard that wasn't one of the grey market swing-axle vehicles (I've only seen two or three of them). Some dealers were sneaking them in because demand was high with the gas crisis. There are a few '74 to '77 FI standards around here, but I have only seen about 10 in my lifetime. Do you have any '71 - '73 IRS standards out West?
