97 Auto Tranny Question

97 w/3.0 Duratech engine, auto trans w/OD, model unkown. When in Drive it starts out in 1st and runs thru all the gears fine. When I place the selector in "2" it starts out in "2", not 1st. Is this correct? I thought the selector would limit the high end not the low end of the gear range. Dose this with or without OD engaged. Is the tranny heading south? Position sensor? Adjustment? Thanks........

Trans will start in 2nd....that is correct in my experience. I have a '96 duratech. Had shifting problems and a transmission flush and new oil fixed the problem. AX4N transmission, BTW

Thanks, JVH. I've been meaning to flush the tranny for over a year now, just gonna have to do it!
