help with 88 toyota camry

in the console of my 88 toyota camry near the emergency brake there is a button that is labled ECT what is it and what does it do please email me at [email protected]

It changes the rpms at which the transmission shifts. The normal setting is more conservative and gives you the best gas mileage. The power setting keeps the transmission in lower gears longer and increases the performance of the car at the expense of gas mileage.

ECT = Electronically Controlled Transmission; and it works just the way Brian said.
