HELP!! Transmission pan?
Dang... I hate the snow!... driving home from a movie tonight in the snow my wife hit a big ROCK the plow must have pulled into the road. We hit hard and jumped it. Everything was ok... I told her to watch the guages to see if any spiked.. Well, sure enough about 2 miles later the transmission was starting to fail and as we limped into a local convenience store the car was dead in the water. A tranny fluid trail following us.
Is there a "transmission pan" that we might have simply punctured? Could I be that lucky? The car is still in the parking lot. I will deal with it tomorrow. |

Re: HELP!! Transmission pan?
Absolutely there is a transmission pan that could have been punctured. In fact I would bet that you either punctured the pan or you broke a coolant line on the transmission. If you went two miles and trailed tranny fluid that far you probably didn't knock too big a hole in the pan. You should be able to either patch that pan temporarily or get a new one from a dealer. Since it is the dead of winter get the van towed to a garage and get it replaced there. Also while they have the pan off have them change the filter before refilling the transmission with ATF+4 fluid if it is a 2k or newer.
Let us know the outcome. |

YEAH for a pan!
The pan was DEMOLISHED! Filter inside also blown away. I may take a pic and post it. Thank goodness it was only the pan. The rock must have been as big as a St. Bernard dog! I replaced the pan and filter, filled it with new tranny fluid and I am up and running!... About $65 total in parts. Thanks for helping... it gave me hope this morning that there might be an easy fix rather than a new tranny.
Thanks again! oh, how much tranny fluid should I need? |

Re: HELP!! Transmission pan?
If you have the 41TE, it takes about 5 quarts of Mopar ATF +4.
