just bought car, need electrical help, cooling fans dont turn on
hey people,
just won an ebay aution for a white 87 924s, the car is in fair shape, its got the usual wear and tear in the carpet in the driver's side carpet, and a cracked dash. the body is straight and has very minor dents and paint chips, nothing im going to fix, considering the rough nature of my school... : typical for a 200,000+ mile car. im not consirned about mialage, ive got another motor with only 140k on it... it recently had the front end service for the engine, and the oil is quite clean. its got a weltmisieser (sp?) chip, throttle cam from 944online.com and a KnN air filter . the only problem is that it overheats. the previous owner said that it was probably the thermostat, ohh joy, 10+ hours of work ahead of me... well, we got the car home and found that the coolant still flows... ok, so its not the thermostat... then what is it? the motor runs great, and it dosent studder, and it still makes good power. so, after letting the car warm up a bit, past the point where the fans in my other 924s would kick on. suprise, they didnt kick on... so, i need to find out whats wrong, nothing is wrong in the fuse box area, and gave everything a quick once over and didnt see any loose connections, but i might have missed something... so, im wondering if anyone out there has had a similar problem with their 924s, or 944. thanks for the help guys.

The cooling fans are triggered by a thermofan switch.
It is located on the upper driver side of radiator. It has two temperature set points, 92C and 102C. Disconnect the three prong plug and jumper the middle and one end with ignition ON. Fans should run in slow speed. (keep fingers off the fan blades!) Jumper both ends and fans run in high speed. To test the fan motors, turn on A/C with ignition ON and they should run. If they don't, fan motors are seized or burned out or shorted. |

thanks man! i tried the A/C bit and it worked, the fans came on, the only problem is, when they did come on, they didnt cool the motor down.... after shutting it down, i also found that my #2 injector is leaking where it comes into contact with the manifold... ARG!!! ok, so if the water pump and thermostat obviously are working because of the rate at which the temperature climbs. ok, on my previous 924s once the fans came on, the temp dropped like a brick.... but htis one just steadily climbed at the same rate. ok, now im lost, this german enginering is very confusing..... quality, no doubt, but confusing....

hot 924
check for air in the cooling system. warm up the engine or use a presure tester to put about 10psi on the system, then back out the 12mm bolt on the top waterneck (front of cylinder head) until coolant comes out. also your thermostat could be stuck, water would still circulate though the block and heater core but not though the radiator, warm up the engine and touch the bottom radiator hose if its cool the thermostat is closed.
