head gasket replacement

We took the car out of the driveway here the other day and the temperature started to skyrocket (outside temp. was around -25 C). I pulled over and let the car idle and the temp went back down. The guys at the garage told me that the coolant fan was not working due to a computer problem. He also told me that the head had warped and would need remachining. They want $1400 to do the work! Has anyone had similar problems with their saturns or heard of the technical bullitens outlining this a typical saturn problem?

Thanks,

Re: head gasket replacement

overheating may cause a head to warp, but you can't really tell without removing the head. if he is assuming the head is warped because the gauge said it overheated once, i would run away, fast. if the engine is runing perfictly normal, then out of sight out of mind.

however, i bet your ECT sensor needs replaced, you can do it yourself for less then $20. - http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24003
