head cylinder?

I have a 1994 Ford Escort lx with 150,000 kms on it. The car's engine "shakes" when it's running and there's is alot of exhaust coming from the muffler(alot more than normally would). I was told by a mechanic friend that the head was badly damaged. His advice was to get a used engine. I was wondering if the "head" he was referring to was the head cylinder, and if not what is it? I personally don't want to replace the engine and was hoping I could just replace the head, would it be more expensive?

Re: head cylinder?

He is talking about the cylinder head. This is the part of the car where the cam and spark plugs reside. It would be far cheaper to replace the engine given the amount of kilometers on the car. A new head along with labor to install would cost almost as much as it would to purchase an engine with less wear and have it installed. It will also give you a more reliable vehicle.
