cv joints

have a 96 Geo Metro that both cv joints need to be replaced both boots are torn bad.
what has to be replaced the whole shaft on each side from the spindle nut to the transmission or can just the cv joint be replaced. does the spindle need to be removed?if so do i need to remove a ball joint on each side???
and does the axle shaft just slide out of the transmission or is there a clip??
also do i need to drain the tansmission first???

any thing else you an think of before i rip it apart.
thanks

Re: cv joints

It is probably cheaper and easier to replace the whole shaft,I just looked it up on autozone.com and a left side reman shaft for my car is only
$59.95. You dont need to drain the trans but you will probably lose some fluid. Also, I think they just go in and click in place but no extra clips. On that I am not sure though.Hope this helps.

Re: cv joints

The shafts just click in and out of the trans. It may be a little tough but you will feel them click in to place. Just don't separate the new joints or they will not work. Also you will need to separate the ball joints to get the the axle out of the spindle. Pretty easy about a 2hr job with the right tools and some help!!

Re: cv joints

just put a large screwdriver between tranny case and axle, that will pop them out with a little pressure. to make sure they are seated right after i put new ones in i give them a light tap with a brass hammer on the theaded end
