Escort Continues To Crank Over

what the heck, went out yesterday morning in 5 degree weather here in Iowa, Put the key in iginition, turned key to start position, she continued to crank and crank over ,EVEN after the key was removed from the iginition, So to get it to quit cranking over i had to disconnect the battery. Help quick please, i have to fix it today, cause i have to work Sunday, : (

Starter solonoid (relay) could be stuck. Remove the small connector from the solonoid (this is the power lead from your ignition switch) Try tapping on the solonoid, and touch the battery cable again to the battery. (I suggest you use the (-) cable) If the starter kicks in, you will know the solonoid is stuck in the closed position. If the starter does not kick in, hook the ignition wire back up and see if it works normally, or not at all.
