Leaking A/C compressor

My A/C compressor is leaking, the leak is in the body of the compressor, (i can see it bubbling out) looks like where it is bolted together. I'm guessing that it is probably an o-ring.

Here's my questions:

Do you guys know if any one sells rebuild kits for these compressors?
If no rebuild kits, where is a good place to buy a dependable replacement?
Any other ideas on how to fix it?
Just take it apart...if it is an o-ring there match it up with a new one? (sounds easy will it work)

I don't want to buy a new compressor, this one will freeze your ballz off.

Re: Leaking A/C compressor

If the leak is coming through the compressor clutch it can be rebuilt with special tools but it is not really worth it. If it is where the lines hook in that is pretty simple- just have the system evacuated(if it hasn't leaked out already), loosen he bolt and get new o-rings. As for where to buy one I would try online. I bought one on Ebay that was used but has a 1 year warranty on it for like $89 with free shipping. Ones at auto parts stores run around 300-400 while AC Delco are like 700-800. Good Luck

Thanks for the help.

I posted a pic of the problem. Does anyone know if this can be repaired?

Not worth it... Just get either a reman or a boneyard compressor. By the time you got done having that repaired it would just be as cheap/easy to get a new one.

Re: Leaking A/C compressor

Yeah definately go and get one new or from a boneyard. It will be much easier and less aggravating in the long run.
Good Luck

Re: Leaking A/C compressor

Well, instead of buying a new or reman. compressor, I decided I would try a cheap fix. I used JB WELD and I'm pretty sure I sealed the hole. I figured it was worth a shot $20 is a lot better than $250. Now I need to refill the system. I have refilled systems before and they worked. I know they weren't exactly right...I want to do this one right, so I have a few questions.

The owners manual says 2lbs of refridgerant...is that 2lbs of freon and oil? or 2lbs of freon plus X ounces of oil?

How much oil should I put in, if any? From what I have read the system needs a total of 8 ounces of oil. Haynes tells to add different amounts of oil for replacing certain parts, so not all the oil comes out when the system is vented.

Any help is appreciated. Any comments about how dumb it is to use JB WELD instead of just replacing the compressor are ok too.

Re: Leaking A/C compressor

That JB Weld is amazing stuff. Nothing to lose here trying it. Probably wouldn't need oil unless you've replaced the dryer or really leaked out a bunch. Be a real good idea to pull a vacuum on the system and go with a full recharge.
