Unhappy Please Help!!!!!!!

Someone Please Help Me!!! I Have A '97 Ford Escort. I Was Driving Home Today And All Of A Sudden I Heard This Real Loud Clicking Noise. It Sounded Like Something Was Hitting The Inside Of The Car Hood. I Was Close To Home So I Tried To Make It. The Car Stalled On Me. I Started It Up Again And The Noise Got Louder, But I Made It The Rest Of The Way. When I Lifted Up The Hood To See What Was Going On, The Engine Was Kind Of Shaking And The Noise Is Coming From Underneathe The Engine. I Don't Know Whats Wrong Or What To Do. The Noise Is There As Soon As The Car Starts. Please Anybody, Somebody....any Advice On What It Is???? And What I Need To Do To Fix It.

sounds like a belt let go possable timing belt. look on the passenger side of the engine and see if any of the belts are of broken or frayed. Then if not check the timing belt.

Princess,
Sorry to say loud noises from an engine are never good. From your description, I suspect a broken valve spring. I suggest:
a. Remove the sparkplugs and see if they are uniform in color, no damage etc. If variation or damage exists, remove the valve cover and inspect the valve springs.
b. With the plugs out, (if you have a helper) try to start the engine, and listen for the noise and try to locate it.
c. If the plugs look good: perform a compression test.
Get back to us with the results.

Re: Please Help!!!!!!!

I agree with souphound. Escorts have a problem with broken valve springs or valve seats that let loose and crunch up the piston and head. If you're lucky, you can take the car and have the head replaced, but if the valve seat did a lot of damage, you may have to replace the engine. And a broken timing belt would not let the engine run at all, much less make that kind of noise. I've seen at least 4 escorts, both the 1.9 and 2.0 engines, drop the valve seats, usually in the number 4 cylinder.

Re: Please Help!!!!!!!

I have yet to drop a valve seat (knock on wood) and rev the piss outta my car, and it's overheated a few times as well. I would suggest checking the timing, as my car has jumped time from a nice good jump on the throttle. To me, it sounds as if you've jumped 1 possibly 2 belt notches on the cam. Good luck, and let us know, please!

Re: Please Help!!!!!!!

Did you ever get your engine figured out? I have a 95 Escort sedan and the engine has started to make an aweful sound but only as it decelerates. Friend of mine thinks it could be a broken valve spring. Gonna pull valve cover and take a peek. How did you first realize something was going bad on yours?
