remote starter recommendations and feedback

I was out looking at remote starters for my 00 z24 (auto trans.)today and realized that there are literally hundreds of different makes with an endless ammount of features. I thought i'd throw this opertunity out for everyone to give some feedback and maybe some good, and not so good points, and features to look for that you may have encountered while buying these. It would be a big help to me because i'm just lost looking at the isle full of these things.

Thanks everyone.

Re: remote starter recommendations and feedback

well with a remote start all you really are goin to need is one that will A. start your car remotely
B.Still allow you to use your keyless entry an trunk entry if applicable.
I know there are hundreds of different models an kinds out there that are more than necessary for daily use- if you just want a basic start your car an keyless entry one then ignore all the ones that say Remote start and Alarm. if you want a good installer place i would rec. Circ. City they will install if for $100 and it will be done properly an professionally
They are great on a cold day to get your car all warm an toasty before you get in it - i just cant get any on my cars they are all standard trans.

just Ignore the ones with alarms if your not looking for all that - just get one that says remote starters an keyless entry or it just might say remote starter.

Good Luck
Hope that helped ya out !

Re: remote starter recommendations and feedback

Try to go to www.directed.com and look up authorized dealers in your area. Be cautious on going to big chain stores because they are more geared for "stereo systems in a box" and aren't usually well versed in alarms or remote starts. Directed is the pinnicle of remote starters. Any of their lines are good. Valet 561r units come with one remote and work up to 500'. The Python units have up to 1/4 mile range plus lifetime warranty. They even have remotes with LED lights that transpond back and forth from the cars.

remote starters are good to have and it comes down to what u are looking for in features doorlocks ,etc and range starting from 2way or just plan jane 305mhz chevys work good with the higher end models DEI is about the best the warranty is life time if iu buy the higher end units.

A quarter mile seems a bit much unless however it includes a device (such as lcd or led light) to tell if your car is running after you accidently bumped it while digging through your pockets at the mall, and have it running in the lot without you knowing.

I like the idea posted here about looking into a GM satrter. I had no idea they had one for retail. I get an employee discount from my buddy there so i'll ask him this week about the pros and cons.
But if it says GM on the box....$$$$$$$$$ Would you like to mortgage your house for this sir.?

I'll find out about this tomorrow and post back the specs and price.

Thanks for all the info guys. I learnsd something from everyone.

Nope. Gm has not made or packaged any remote start availible via parts department. You can only get them on a very few selected new car platforms like the Maibu Maxx. They do however have keyless entry and alarms http://www.aatechnologies.com/gmalarms/vsl4000.asp

Ironically, these are made by Directed Electronics. I have heard though that Gm is no longer even doing these kits since they are having such a rough time electrically with their cars.

In my area, they are pretty bad. Trust me, they do more stereo changes than remote starters. I was told that DEI had a lot of issues with C City and no longer sells product to them anymore.

Around here, yes. I have many customers that work in factories and such and need a lot of range to get the cars to start. Trust me, 1/2 range really isn't that far.

OOPS, I forgot that DEI also had this one http://www.autotechs.com/items/item499.htm for GM but you have to already have keyless entry in order for it to work. Also, OEM keyless entries only work up to 100' at best so it is basically worthless.
