I'm gonna Cry!!!

Hi to all,
I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee LTD (4.0 Automatic RHD)

I need to know a few things...

1) Are parts between the LHD US model and RHD UK model interchangable?

2) Can anyone reccomend a supplier that can provide me with a complete rear axle?

First of all we thought it was a wheel bearing from the grinding sound, then the garage told me that the diff was knackared and that they would have to repair it - quoting 3 hours work.. now they've had the car a day and haven't started on it, other than to have a look and advise that I need a complete new rear axle.

Since this problem, it's as if the car lags when you put your foot down, then jolts in to gear, which to me sounds like a diff problem, but i don'thave a clue when it comes to these things.

I'm at my whits end on this one - Chrysler UK's dealer network have quoted £1750 + TAX for the part, but all the US websites I look at a complete axle with casing seems to retail for about $700.

Any advice would be received most greatfully.

Re: I'm gonna Cry!!!

well I would say that the rear axle would be intechangeable on the back (since the Diff is in the middle fo the axle) but the front axle on US models the diff is on the Driverside (Left Side) and most likely on UK models would be on the Right side.

but I think the rear axle from US model would be the same.as long as you get the same axle as your (Dana 35, 44, etc.)

Try pricing one from a salvage yard. Should be able to get one for a lot cheaper than the Dealer. Dealer Pricing is always Very High even in the US.

Right... am I being stupid, or using a duff mechanic?

I can fix the human body, no problem, and I understand my way around a computer, but cars baffle the hell out of me?

The mechanic I have gone to has said the diff is inside the axle and that the diff is knackared, but getting it off is going to damage the axle.

I thought the diff was the big circular lump half way down the axle - does this come with a new axle?

TRy going to the www.2dana.com web site has detailed Pics of the differential. A complete Axle assembly comes with everthing. I dont know if you need just the gears and bearings or axles. You usally dont replace the whole Ass. unless it is really Trashed!

I tried that website - there's some great art on there, but nothing to do with a diff - or anything to do with a car to be hinest!

Re: I'm gonna Cry!!!

Hey Paulgreen,

If you can fix the human body and computers are no problem then a car should be a piece of cake! They have way less parts!!! Good luck and keep up the UK humor! Chad

Hey 1bad, I know it's off topic, but have you been watching the Barrett Jackson auto auction at all?? Some beautiful cars on there. One was a Hemicuda with 9k original miles and went for $147,000.

Re: I'm gonna Cry!!!

Mx, to continue off-topic, I'm too poor for cable or dish but my dad down the road gets it so I catch it here and there. Great show but mostly "dream cars". I went to a local auction here in OKC back in the late 80's and watched an all original near mint 19k miles hemi charger/roadrunner (can't remember which) with auto and bench seat. I think it sold for around $25k. Prob would be one of those $100k cars now.........

That links helped a load.. does anybody know of a UK transmission specialist, as based on this and the fact that there is no sign of the garage doin anything other than spinning my axle to se where it's noisy I think it's not as bad as they've told me. I have a hunch they just didn't want to take on the job.

Could someone give me some supplier info and costs on a diff kit and possibly a trac-lok kit including all parts.?

As for the uk humor chad, if I didn't laugh I'd cry - even tho I'd disagree about humans being more complicated than cars... a bit of plaster or pig and we're sorted - cars need precesion bearings! At my end of human body repair in EMS its' about keeping the subject chugging along until we get them in to the nearest garage!
