Engine swap?

Hey guys, I have a question that I believe is unique...i checked the archives and didnt see anything that would answer this for me, so, sorry if its a repost. Im fairly new around the garage, and am looking to get more power out of my 2g non turbo, FWD talon. From what i've been reading around here, that means i have a 420A engine. I was looking to do a full upgrade on this thing, HRC turbo system, intake, high flow cat, exhaust, pulleys, eventually new fuel system (trying not to do this while its a daily driver), so, the works. But, being I'm a poor college student, im doing this in stages. I was discussing this with a friend at work recently and he said I would be better off if i just did an engine swap with the 6 bolt, first generation turbo motor, said I could get one rebuilt for about 700 bucks, and it would be able to handle more power down the line and just be better overall than my current engine. Is this possible, a direct swap out, that is? And secondly, is it worth it, or should i just throw the money into the current engine?

Thanks in advance for any info you guys could provide.

Re: Engine swap?

:dripping with sarcasm: yea this has NEVER been discussed before. this gets asked almost every week thats why its in the "FAQ READ this BEFORE posting" thread

"What engine can I swap into my GS/RS ? - ashah000

The only engine that can be directly swaped is the one that is in there right now (the 420a).
You can swap a GS-T engine into the car but it would be extremely difficult and costly.

Here are the costs (from 2gnt)
1. 4G63 turbo engine (stock) $1500
2. transmission (stock GS-T FWD) $500
3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) $300
5. shift linkage $200
6. custom engine mounts $200
7. chassis cross member $100
8. complete exhaust $200
9. intercooler, turbo, related parts $500
10. boost gauge/fuel filter, etc $300
11. Installation $1500
Total - $5600

You can also swap in a 2.4L from a Dodge Stratus/PT cruiser. This is easier than the GS-T swap, however it does require some custom faberication. Also it would be backwards (the header would be on the firewall side)"

its also part of the 1000AAQ (already answered questions)

"Some owners might think that performing an engine "swap" rather than a "conversion" would make things easier. This is not so. The engine control units (ECUs) for the NT and T engines are different, as are the engine/ECU wiring harnesses. Therefore, to properly swap in a turbo engine into a non-turbo chassis, the ECU and wiring harness must be replaced with the turbo versions.

Additionally, an engine swap by itself is no trivial task, especially if the replacement engine requires work prior to installation. The FWD and AWD flywheels are different, and there may be other differences that prevent a turbo motor from matching up to a non-turbo chassis or driveline. While it is theoretically possible, most people would not find it worth the effort.

Owners of 'converted' non-turbos may find the insurance to be less than a factory turbo car. This is not a guarantee, however, especially if the insurance company learns about the conversion.

Those seriously interested in this conversion will find the article "Do It Yourself Turbocharging" from Overboost.com to be an interesting read."

its also been discussed on these forums MANY times. SEARCH FIRST ASK LATER!

Re: Engine swap?

Well I'll give him credit for searching somewhat, thats better than most poeple do. But yes, this is already covered here. I wouldnt bother with that swap if I was a millionare, who needs the headache? Its easier and cheaper to just swap cars. With a 1g its different, since the motors are at least similar fundamentally. With 2Gs its too much work IMO. And the 420 can be built into a strong motor, I would focus on going that route if you want to go turbo, but dont want to change cars.
