what kind of tranny is in my 86 fb, all I know is its a five speed. if any one knowes what they were putting in them that year let me know. and how do you tell the difference in a 305 motor and a 350 motor. When I bought the car I was told that it had a 350 in it, when I told my frend that the timing marks were on the top of the timing chain cover and not of set of to the side he sead my moter was a 305. Some one told me that if the oil dip stick was on the pasenger side (and it is) that it was a 350. Im still not sure what I have.

What is your VIN number...if the engine is stock still that will tell you.

the harmonic balancer is different,is the easiest way to figure out if its a 350 or not,at a glance.go to a parts house and compare a 305 balancer,and a 350 balancer.then look at yours and see which one you have .

you can also look on the back of the block, on the drivers side behinde and under the valve cover, there is a flat spot, with a number, most 350's end in the #0010, or 0110 ,if its one of the two , its a 350, some older 350's had a different #, but you dont see to many

0110 ,0010 one of those is the correct #, i just dont remember which one it is

the brand name of your 5 speed transmission is borg warner.

the number on the deck of the engine in front of head number 2 tells you what kind of pistons it has,and can lead you to what size valves it has,and where it was cast.
For instance my engine code is 1027CLJ(375hp 1970 block stock w/big valve heads and flat top pistons).Also in 1970-73',they had available another engine with a code of 1027CKJ(330-350HP block w/big valve heads but dished pistons).the same identical casting number popped up in the 75' Nova .they had a 275-300hp engine with small valves,and dished pistons available that year.total POS.And they all were indentical externally and shared the same number on the back of the block(3970014)Each were optionally ordered thru chevy for various models in 1970-75.

The actual casting code on a lot of engines are the same.However the engine configurations and power ratings are worlds apart,due to whatever stuff was put into the block,wich is where the second number is born.its a code for the parts in the block.

On a lot of 80's model 305's,the easiest way to find out if it has peanut heads,and flat top pistons,(305 cid H.O.)is by looking at the number by the head.The code on the rear of the engine is the same for the regular 305,as it is with the 305 HO,but the deck number is different.

Ok thanks for the info hot rod. Can You be more specific witch one is the #2. head I looked all over and could not see the #'s any were. Is it under the AC compresser bracket. I need to know were I should start scraping off the grease oil and other funk. thanks
