Noise coming from Somwhere???

I am new here so I will try and explain as clear as posible my problem. I have 1993 Rodeo with a 1995 motor.

Recently I changed the oil and replaced it with 10-30w when the motor was turned on the oil light came on for about 2-3 seconds while the oil lubricated the engine. Well after this the SUV ran perfectly and still does but about three weeks ago it started making a clanking noise, sometimes, the noise only happens when in iddle, the oil preasure is fine and the oil level is correct. The noise comes and goes.

When the car is turned on be it hot or cold it will not sound but after running it a while it starts again when in iddle. So I took it to my mechanic he could not find anything he said that the motor was responding and sounding nicely. So I took it to another mechanic which told me it must be the crankshaft bearings.

But my question is would this not have caused failure long ago of the engine? What is the problem? The sound comes from under the engine area.

Any help would be appreciated.

Both mechanics said no. Plus it sounds really loud when in iddle it will sound and when I accelerate the sound will get faster but go away quickly.

Sounds like your timing belt tensioner is going bad.

Even if it only sounds like it is coming from the crank case?

oops.

yup this sounds like a classic case of timing belt tensor knock.

Some mechcanics misdignos it for rod knock. I can remember a couple of cases when the mech. was just about ready to yank the engine and replace it and the n the owner does some research on the web and find out that the engine is fine.

Is there an easy way to diagnose this or do have to open the belt compartment and check it to see?

If you remove the timing belt covers (fairly big job) and the noise goes away, it's your timing belt tensioner/pusher. What happens when it goes bad is, it does not tighten your T-belt, giving so much slack at idle that the belt slaps against the T-belt covers. No covers to hit = no noise.

One thing I should note the noise MOST of the time stops if the truck is not level (on a hill, sidewalk) does this mean anything to you?

Thanks for the help I will take it to the mechanic tomorrow.
