Flood Damage?

A frined of mine just bought a 92 and it went through a flood in 98, it ran when the guy he got it from bought it, but now it turns over but doesnt start. How many things could be toasted from the flood damage?
Oh he bought the Stealth for $300.00, pretty clean interior, body needs paint and has a few dings, but its all there.

take it to a pro. If you start guessing and fix something it so it turns on but still might have weak components inside, then it could experience some critical failure later on. In my experience during floods I can tell if water got into the engine. a dead giveaway is water in the intake. if not then drain the oil. if there is water in the oil then yes you got water in there and should be flushed with new oil. the reason its not turning over (and I will put money on that) is that the starter motor is in the lowest part of the motor and a slight brush of water will fry it. the car will continue to turn on for a few more days but then it will just quit on you. every time i get standing water under my car the starter fails. get it checked out by a mechanic.

Re: Re: Flood Damage?

The main things I would be concerned with are the ECU and other electrical components. I bought a parts car that went thru a flood. I was hoping I could do some regualr maintenance and at least get it to fire to check some things. The ECU was toast so it was a no go. If it was flooded severly enough its not even worth trying to fix. Especially if its been sitting since 98.

Re: Flood Damage?

Also on cars that have been flooded...all the wiring becomes brittle and falls apart a lot earlier than it should, I don't know how long it takes exactly but I know that much.

Man that made me laugh. ouch my side hurts now, lol.

It depends on how extensive the flood is. I have had water sitting up to my window wayyy over my door handle but never got any into the car. the engine did get a little though. this was on my eclipse, not the 3000GT......Id shoot my pinky toe if I did that to the 3000GT!........BOOYAAH.
