weird noise when shifting into drive or reverse

I just bought a 1999 Grand Cherokee. It makes a buzzing/whining noise when shifting into reverse or drive from park (automatic tranny). Does the same when shifting into park except sometimes in kinda makes a popping sound. Seems like it shifts kinda hard. Is anyone else have this problem? I have the option from the dealer where a bought it to get an extended warranty on the transmission but only covers the internally lubricated parts of the tranny. So, not even sure if something like this would be covered. Any suggestions on what this could be? thanks...
