Unhappy coolant recovery tanks???

I broke a nipple on the original tank, i replced with a replacement part....butttt....i am wondering if there has been a design change??? I do not remeber my old tank having to square holes on the upper left side that would be hiden behind the "G-11" plastic badge!!! While this new one does!! I was broke down 50 miles from home and trashed the old one when i replaced it ..so i cant compare the two!!. I was trying to refill and hadn.t waited for the pressure to subside when the pressuere came off the tank i heard a small popping sound and the tank has bled all pressure off out of these two holes every since!! Needless to say the car had overheated and been unuseable since!!! Any suggestions!!!

Hello, if you are referring to the round recovery tank on the vehicle, I know that at least up to 97, they have stayed the same. I saw the same tank on my friend's 97 Jetta. I had some trouble with mine so I just went to a reputable used parts place and I got one that was like new for about 15.00. The square hole/ holes are just overflow ports. When you refill your car with coolant, first remove the cap off of the tank, turn you car over and let the engine run, fill the tank until it reaches the full mark with the engine running. You must have the engine running while filling the tank to avoid air locks. Once that is done, replace the cap on the tank. Take the car for a drive and then you will find that you have to repeat the fill process, this does not mean that you have a leak, rather, the coolant has run into the cooling system thus needs to be topped up again. You should have to do this only two times, the first time and the second time, after the drive.
