Re: Talon New Engine.. HOW MUCH??

Get a turbo motor. I have seen a few site that have the tranny(AWD) engine ecu and a few other things for 1300. For a non turbo motor only 650. http://www.totaljdm.com/index.cfm/fu...dm_engines.htm

I have a 92 Laser turbo if it is interchangable. You can have the whole car for $500, lol. (the frame is damaged)

Re: Talon New Engine.. HOW MUCH??

Cant even buy new engines any more. Best option is a rebuild. From the factory, 1300 for the short block. You dont want to know what a long block goes for, even if I could remember. Some dSM vendors like SBR will sell built motors assembled as far as you want it, up to a fully assembled long block that can just be dropped in. Short blocks start at 1500, long blocks will be sunstantially more. Tranny is a whole different ball game. Can be bought new for some years, has to be rebuilt for others. Shep racing and Team Rip are the two most common tranny builders for DSMs. Starts at ~800 for a basic rebuild, up to ~2500 for all the upgrades. Add a couple hundred for a box and shipping.

I would just spend 300-500 on a decent ~100k miles shortblock that has been redlined by some fucking nipster from the US, and drive it on. Rebuild the tranny when it breaks.

I'm confused. I thought you already had a DSM and were looking for motors. Too late to go changing transmissions now. Sure, it can be done... for a buttload of time and money. There are a couple differences in the chassis and you'd be buying a whole bunch of expensive parts. It would be much cheaper to simply buy the model with the transmission you want. DSM's are inexpensive [fortunately].

Now, if you don't already own a DSM and you're really into drifting, forget it. Leave them for the guys who want to go fast. If you want to drift, get a 240 SX or something. There's not a whole lotta support for drifting in the DSM community/aftermarket anyway. Yes, you can drift a four wheel drive vehicle. Yes, it is tricky.

If drifting isn't all that important to you, buy an AWD. Notice I didn't ask what kind of racing you're into? That's because it doesn't matter that much. If a person drives a FWD and then an AWD around a road course, they're generally going to get a slightly better time with the FWD. Of course, AWD owns nearly everything on the drag strip as well as rally. No one who drives an AWD DSM is whining about how much they wish they had a FWD transmission. After your first launch in an AWD, you won't miss drifting.

My passion is road couse/autocross type racing. I have a FWD and I like it. Although, if someone asked me today if I would take they're AWD in trade for my FWD, I'd do it in a heartbeat and never look back... except to yell "SUCKER!" out my window as I drove off. So, if you do a lot of road course racing, highway racing form a roll or autocross, buy a FWD. For everything else, All Wheel Drive.

P.S. Even on early model DSM's, expect to pay about $800-$1000 more for an AWD model. Though I would not suggest buying an early model AWD. You want the 4 bolt rear differential found on the '92.5's and later.
