driftingruins your car?
my friend told me you could only drift with manual cars, and ive been thinking of how i could drift my with automatic. i never wanted to pull the e-brake while driving because i heard if you do its bad for the engine and the front axle. yesterday however, i figured out that i can drift if i throw the car in manual, start a turn, and pull the e-brake. ive only done it once, and before i do it anymore im wondering if its bad for the car at all. i figure that when the cars in neutral, its just like pressing the cluth and the engine is disengaged from the wheels so its not affected by the e-brake. is this true? and also, does pulling the e-brake while the car is driving have a negative effect on the axle? if all it does is wear out the tires and the e-brake, thats no prob, but i really cant afford a new axle. just want soem advice before i do something real stupid, thanx

if your car isnt set up to be drifting, your going to ruin it. And i wouldnt really drift a manual, you can, but pulling the e-brake isnt the best way to dit it. You should learn heal toe and all these other methods...and do a search for some info...

#1 you can drift with a automatic..my firebird formula is an auto...and it drifts damn well. #2 when you put your car into neutral and pull the e-brake...thats not drifting...drifting is a skill of contolling your car while gas/brake is applied..going around a turn real quick and sliding sideways isnt drifting...specially just pulling the e-brake (i think everyone who drifts here will agree with me on that). and drifting period is bad for any car, even drift cars. just like drag racing. #3 i dont believe that pulling the e-brake will hurt your car any worse than doing a burn out. and if you dont think that sliding your tires doesnt hurt your tires...you probably shouldnt be drifting...btw...if your actually serious about getting into drifting...you might want to do some reading on drift techniques...its something that can only make your driving better..that goes for anyone.

Drifting is bad for the car... ok, its more like UR BAD and the car suffers from ur mistks....i smashed my car many times and u don't want to do that right? so .... if u afraid that u will brake the car , u should not Drft....
BTW with auto, all u can do is power slide, or jurk the car and voula! be carefull with the e break, u can snap it ! specially on OLD cars!

to drift in an auto i would have overdrive off and be in first/second gear. Not neutral. I wouldnt even bother trying in a auto....i used to in my auto, now i got a stick and holy cow....waaaaay easier. Drifting is bad for the car yes, because of stress and flex. If you drift you will crash!!!! if your serious about drifting you cant be affraid to break your car, because it will happen. Its part of it. I just crashed on monday lol, drifted on a bridge to come onto the service road. Bridge was concrete or something more grippy and the freaking service road is blacktop. I was going about 35-40 , dropped it into second, held it pretty damn good around the actual turn and then on the exit hit the blacktop (which was a bit wet and its super slippery) and spun around and hit a speed limit sign. I wish i had it on tape cuz i know if it was dry out i would of hit it perfect even had the smoke rolling. Wasted my rear quarter but will be fixed by weekend if my parts arrive. But i would recommend doing it in a parking lot starting out with controlled donuts.....thats what all the pros say to do first. Once you can hold and control the size of your donuts going both clockwise and counter-clock wise then you should be able to hold a true drift. Be prepared to spend money on tires and what not. I would recommend getting cheap ass rims too, because you will tear up any rims you have on there.

i got an auto an i can drift it jus fine. i dunno what method its called but i start to fish the back end a little bit about 30ft before the turn an i can control it pretty good, then when i get to the corner i jus make sure my rear end is sliding the right way and im gone, and yes drifting isnt something where u can jus pull an ebrake an slide the corner an say o look i jus did a major drift when all u did was do a power slide. another way to drift is to have it in drive then when u come to the turn just like in a manual throw it down a gear sept in the auto throw it into first, it throws the back in, ba also not very good on the transmission, only try that if your desparate. and seriously drifting on the streets is somewhat ok as long as your causious of what ur doing, do it somewhere sacluted!!!!

yea the method that he is talking about is a feint drift i believe...yea that is one of my fav methods...that and the clutch kick

i jus replaced my front and rear passenger side lower control arms because of drifting, too many curb taps takes a toll. and yea get some crappy rims, its better to break a crappy one then break some that cost you an arm and a leg to get, cuz its just gonna cost an arm and a leg to get just one of those rims to have a complete set again

the reason why drifting with a auto is not a good idea is becuase of the dull throttle response caused by a TQ converter. when your doing throttle inputs mid drift, there will be a delay and its hard to do mid corner adjustments. simple drifts can be done, but not the complicated ones.

very true......i do agree, im not the greatest drifter by all means but i have honestly puller out some pretty amazing drifts, i kno the pros drifts are far greater but for an auto they have been big drifts......but in the end i do still agree throttle is dull |

well i know it will ruin the tires, but i was talking about major damage such as wrecking your axle. i understand how youd have to change strut bars from hitting curbs, but so far ive been ok. im carful about where i drift; only corners that give you a wide space to do it, have no parked cars near them, where there is very little traffic that regularly uses them, and where you have a clean and clear view of oncoming traffic. how do you set your car up for drifting? and what exactly is the difference between a dift and a power slide?

Body roll doesnt help initiate, the weight will transfer just the same people like body roll because it means the weight is loading slower... usefull for beginers because it isnt as snappy.
To me drifting is having some amount of angle before actually entering the corner via feint, sidebrake, or clutch kick. then holding decent angle through the corner with power. |
