Hi All....I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I am having with my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
First of all, a problem came up a year or more ago, with the 4x4 cogs. They are permanently engaged, so when i am driving, and i turn right or left, my front end, vibrates and makes noises. So I take out my 4x4 drive shaft in the summer. Everything still works, sort of, but i just don't have all time 4 wheel drive. In the winter, i put the drive shaft back in, and have 4 wheel drive. My problem is this: when i take out the 4x4 drive shaft, the jeep seems to lose it's brakes. Not driving brakes, parking brakes. The brakes work fine while i am driving, it's when I park on an incline, the jeep rolls. Obviously, the simplist answers are : 1) don't take out the 4x4 drive shaft, But it's a lot harder on gas when they are in, and I've been told that it's a lot harder on the jeep (having the cogs engaged all the time) 2) get the 4x4 fixed. But i've been quoted over $1500.00 just to take it all apart. So my question: 1) does anyone else have this problem? 2) does anyone know of a cheap way to fix this? Sorry this is such a long thread. Thanks for any help you can offer, Jeep Lover aka Charleen |

The Problem sounds like your VC in the Transfer case. Iam assuming you have a 249 Transfer Case. Ive heard that disconnecting the front Drive shaft will damage the Transfer Case on years below 96. Sounds like the Transfer Case is damaged. You can probally pick a used Transfer Case up for about 300-400 at a salvage yard maybe cheaper. If you can un hook a drive shaft you should be able to change the Transfer Case with a little help and tools. Dont know of a cheaper or easier way.
