Slave CD Unit

Just bought the 98 Lumina I had mentioned in previous threads. I was curious as to whether or not it would be possible to add on a slave cd player that GM used or if the factory cd player unit they have been using would fit in the same slot as the tape player/receiver that is currently in my car. The tape player deck that is in there has auxiliary selection button on the face. I have the base model. The reason I don't want to put in an aftermarket is all the units I have looked at would stick out from the dash about 1", and that would just look ugly. Thanx in advance.

If you have the DIN E (large factory radio) from GM, there is a factory CD player of the same size that is a direct fit for your car, however, if you get it from the dealer, be ready to get raped. I was going to order one for my Cadillac, they wanted upwards of $500.00. I ended up buying a aftermarket CD trunk changer with an RF modulator, which sends the CD signal to an unused radio station. And it had remote control.

Go eBay a 10-12 disc changer (ACDelco) and order a cable from techni-car for sixteen bucks. Personally I don't care for the FM modulated units, but that's just me. I installed a changer and ran the cable all for well under $100, and it works flawlessly.

The CD player version of the OE head unit is a direct swap, bought one for my '97 to replace the cassette. I as lucky enough to be at the right place when a totalled car was being taken away to be scrapped, so I told them to let me pull that out first.

There may be a power drop and wiring for a CD changer already in the trunk. It is part of the standard wiring harness on some models, even if not used. I know my '00 Impala had this. If not, the FM modulator unit is the way to go.

Rereading, if your head unit has the aux function, there is most likely a harness in the trunk for a changer.
