Error Code Scanner

Does anyone have any input about where and what kind of Error Code scanner to get. I had a check engine light today, and after paying $50.00 to the shop to hook up their unit, it said a misfire in #8 cylinder. Turned out to be a plug wire. Thanks for any suggestions. John M.

It is a 97 Ram 1500, 2wd, 4speed auto, 5.9L engine

You don't need a scanner then, you can pull the codes yourself. Check this out:
