Progress: 2003 Peugeot 206 WRC Rally of Turkey G/H Panizzi

So, time for a progress thread of this sucker that I've worked on since early March. Taking me plenty of time as it is my first car kit and I don't know a lot about cars...
The car is a Peugeot 206 WRC from the Rally of Turkey 2003 and was driven by the the Panizzi brother, Gilles and Herve. The livery featured in a couple of more rallies during the year but the transkit from Renaissance only came with the decals from Turkey. I think it looks great and that's why I got it

From the transkit I'll use the new dash and rear wing besides the decals. I started out with a 2003 Tamiya kit so I had to get a 2002 one as well to get the gravel suspension, wheels and some protection plates.

This picture was taken early summer (I'll post it as I like to see pics in threads like this...). At this stage I had just primed the body, opened up the roll cage and started to paint the chassis and suspension.

I've drilled all molded rivets and will replace them later.
Mirrors, door sides and the tank, have been dressed in CF decal from scalemotorsport
I will add a scale race cars seat belt set and some PE from Studio27.

Biggest project is building the protection on the lower part of the sides of the body. It has taken me quite some time but I think I'll be ready to post some pictures in a day or two.

best regards
Joel

Fantastic to finally see some progress of this kit Joel. You look to be doing a great job with it. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you build the underside protection, I've yet to see a really clear picture of that part of the 206.

Nice start, I like that particular livery.

Perhaps you're out to be a bit dissapointed here Phil
It turned out I only did the reinforcements on the sides and a bit "around the corner" so to speak. The protection isn't fully attached on the underside. Then I painted the underside pretty much after the tilted 307 that you sent me earlier. I used a technique for the protection that I found on a website (sorry if I offend someone to post the picture without reference):

Looking nice Joel!
We looking forward to some lighter photos! :-)

Is it under chasis same color as body? That isn't clear to me with Pugs in different colors. I know that inner side of body and interior is silver.

I don't know about the underside of the chassis, I think it shall be red actually. But after all, all I have to go on for this one is the wheel housings from my reference pictures and the underside of a 307. When it comes to inner side of the body, I didn't know if it was to be red or silver when I started painting. Still haven't got any references for this particular car but I guess it shall be silver as you say. Unfortunately I painted it red (cause I'm a coward...) and now I don't know if I dare change that one when I finally got a good finish on the outside.

Don't think any of us will be disapointed Joel, underside pics of 206's are hard to find, some guesswork is unavoidable. That pic looks like it is from Mikko's (Mel79) build of Timo Salonen's Finland 2002 Pug.

Bloody h**l I'm a bad photographer... Hrmodeller, you asked for lighter photos...I give you...tada...still as dark but now also blurry pictures...

well I thaught there had to be some more recent photos than a 6 months old one so here are some progress.

Here's the underside without the painted black sections mentioned above. "engine" is done and whole part is slightly weathered. Exhaust is AlcladII polished aluminum and Tamiya X-32, heat stains with tamiya clears.

Body shell is painted with Tamiya TS-49, a few mist coats and then I had to put on three wet coats to get rid of some areas where I had not been careful enough and got some dull spots. Let's see how the panel lines turnes out after such a treatment... Protection at the lower part is made as mentioned above and so far painted TS-14 black, will be treated with some semi-gloss clear after clear coating the whole body.
As the protection is added on to the body with styrene there is a bit of a lip that I wanted black. Masking tape would have covered some of this area but I got the tip to use Bare Metal Foil for masking off the nearest area and it turned out very well.
Paint doesn't look any good on these pics, it is in fact deeper and not that pink...

Most minor parts are painted. Working on the details of the dash for the moment. Have some minor cable work to do and seatbelts. Here are some of the more worked parts. CF tank and door sides plus mirrors and the weathered transmisson parts. Fire exstinguishers are sanded, painted, decalled and then got some black tape as straps.
Seats got decals from the kit and transkit and were then sprayed with Modeler's flat clear (I can really recommend their line of clears)
Sorry for the lousy detail. CF on doors and mirrors turned out great after some hints from Phil (thanks) but I must admit the tank has some weak spots.

Well, we'll see what I can bring on til next time...perhaps some photographic skills...
best regards
Joel

Looing great Joel! Exhaust looking great!
Don't worry about red color on photos. Red is laways tricky to make on photos.

Oh yeah! That exhaust and chassis look fantastic, as do the interior details and differentials. I agree with Zeljko, red is a pig to photograph, made even worse by JPG compression. So are you making the black side protection flat along the top or with cutouts for the jacking points?

CF decaling the Puegot side mirrors is about a difficult a decaling job there is. I'm going to have another try at it soon myself.

Thanks for your kind words guys, I'll try to take the pictures outside next time. After all, I have had some better luck with my bike pics that way.

Sorry for not following you Phil as I'm not that familiar with the rally car technicalities.. Are the jacking points the recessed boltings on the lower side of the car? If it is then I left them as in the Tamiya kit, cutting some areas out of the styrene sheet.

Re: Progress: 2003 Peugeot 206 WRC Rally of Turkey G/H Panizzi

Oh, bugger! (to quote Hugh Grant)
It turnes out the Renaissance dash misses 3-4 mm at the lower part of the center console, meaning it wont reach down to the tunnel. Here's where I come short as I only testfitted it against the tunnel and engine room wall and didn't put it to rest on the roll cage. My mistake and as I've already detailed it it seems hard to do any adjustments.
regards
Joel
