Quick question about Mini engine

Hey guys,
I'm starting to build the Morris Mini Cooper 1275S Mk1(long name eh?) from Tamiya, and was looking through some photos that I have of the engine, and wondered if anyone here knew what the pipe is/used for on the far left of the engine? Also, what could I use to represent it on my model?

helowww.... this is one of my speciality!!! MINI'S.....

well well, that fat chunky black corrugated pipe on the left hand side (from the view) is actually a ventilation pipe...!!!! believe it or not..!!!

so, this pipe is connecting a small inlet behind the grille (to catch the fresh-cold air) to another ventilation inlet behind the wheel arch which then connect to the heater/fan inside the cabin.

no magic, no hocuspocus. but, if u building up a 1275S, there is no duct like that. the idea of 1275S is to compete in the rally, therefore weight reduction is crucial. however, the duct will be replaced with a remote brake servo, since 1275S' are fitted with discbrake on both front wheel. its a bit tight in the engine since all those things are cramped into one. i got 3years collection of MiniWorlds magazines, which definitely has at least tens of thousands of Mini's engine bays. from the original till the heavily modded one. but, those magazines are somewhere in the boxes in my storage room. if i really bored, i will try to look for it, but im not making a promise here.

BTW, is ur one is the road version or the rally version?

and to make it you can use that ribbed part of straw (i think it spels like that). You know that thing that you get in your Cola to drink through it

One AF member, Kurtl, had a technique for making ducting. If I remember correctly, he started with a piece of rod, plastic, metal or whatever shaped to the correct size, curve, etc. Next, he wound wire around it to form the ribs, then the whole thing was covered with BMF and finally painted. Looked the business.

That's odd. I looked up an engine bay pic in Klein's book Rally Cars, and i clearly saw the vent hose. I modeled my 67 monte mini after that, and i'd hate to hear i got it all wrong. Was i looking at the wrong year engine bay? (don't have access to the book right now so i can't if i'm wrong)
Anyway, i have a copied picture of the engine bay somewhere, but it's useless for the road version due to the carbs.

heya... me again, as for rapstagangsta, here's the only pics i can come up with. its actually from a calendar (2001 year... im keeping the calendar becos of the pics... hehe). i think i can find some more in my magazines pile, but its just so much work to do. i have to open all the boxes... which i dont think i might be doing in near future. hehehe. sory bout that. but try to google it, u might comes out with some good pics.

If you're building a road car most mini owners don't fit it. (well the ones i know dont at least). Come to think of it every mini I've ever seen (which is a shite load cause my old man is a mini nut) has never had that.
Back on topic, have you tried a google image search>?
I'd take some pics of my old man's brick's engine bay, but is so grotty you wouldnt see much.

I am a Mini Nut myself. I have restored 2 minis, 1 being a 1966 Cooper 'S'
Sugar free is correct with that being a "fresh air duct"
Your brake servo (in the kit also) will go in the spot where that duct is (inner fender) In reality all of the Cooper 'S' minis (with the exception of some Australian built minis) had that ducting hose. They were tucked under the brake servo. Some years had the duct go all the way to the front grill, where-as some stopped short, just behind the brake servo.

Also to add: The pic is of a MKII Mini Cooper 'S'(1967/68)
The windshield wiper motor is different. There is an alternator (instead of a generator)
And I believe that the blue cable that you see in the pic is an aftermarket internal bonnet (hood) release, which would NOT be available in '60's

007ightning: i did own 2, but lost them. 1st was when i was still in my homecountry, indonesia. i dunno much about it that time (being 16yo with a mini - was 1998), and got that rebuild... and then i came to nz for study. then in 2000 the mini was on fire, i think from short circuit near the gas tank. then my dad sell it for someone that's interested on it.
then a chance (i think still at the same year), i got my uni lecture asking me whether im interested at her friends mini. then i said... YES! so, i have my 2nd one. couple months later, parked it off my friends apartment parking bay (cos im taking her car to get its panel fixed). when i came to return the car, i cant found my car on the bay. so, i just shocked to death..!!! my 1st ever exp.... got my car stolen from me. truly, it's really hurt, eventho ur car is a piece of crap, but u already have that kind of bonding with it. ahahhaa.

so.... years passed, now im driving a sedan. since my dad wont allow me to drive a mini again, being so light thus always feels vulnerable everytime a bigger car passing u by in the motorway (especially those big trukies..). my signature pics is my car at the moment, im thinking of selling it and get into the more sportier honda.

mm... i dont think that blue cable is a remote bonnet release. looks more like a accelerator pedal cable. goes down from the bottom firewall (where one of the engine mount is) to the carb(s) there. first i thot it would be the clutch cable, but since its operating by hydraulics, there is no cable to release the clutch. im pretty sure its the accelerator cable. correct me if im wrong

Now that I take a better look at it, I believe your right. at first I found it odd for the cable to outshoot all the way towards the front of the car. But I think it just makes a big loop up towards the SU Carbs.

My first mini (my first car at 16) was a hunk of junk. Freshly imported from the UK. Rusted floorpans (that i could see right through to the ground), bondo everywhere, paint flaking.....you get the point. But I loved that car. I got into an accident with it, and it broke my heart. Luckily not to bad of damage was done. I tied a rope around a tree and around the front end (grill area) and pushed my mini. After a few pushes, the grill area was pulled back out. With a new grill on there, you would have never known.
I cant even imagine how I would feel if I came out from a store to not find one of my mini's where I left it.
