Something very strange is going on

So one of my 3 dogs has been acting stranger than I have ever seen any of them act before. Its our puppy, Mercedes, well, shes not really a puppy anymore, shes almost 4 years old. It all started about 3 days ago, she was outside and she came to the back door crying. This is normal, so I just let her in. Well when I let her in, her tail was tucked, ears pinned back and she was shaking. She spent the rest of the night doing nothing but sitting in the hallway crying and shaking.

Since then, she has been acting really wierd. When she isnt sleeping, shes crying. Not walking around or anything, just sitting and crying. When she does move, her eyes dart around really fast, and she sniffs almost everything, which isnt normal for her. Her tail is always tucked now, and her ears pinned back. She will go outside still, but she will come back in shaking and crying like the first night.

I went outside and looked around several times, day and night but havent found anything. If it was an animal or something, my other dogs would have gone nuts the first night, so I dont think its that. There is no major wildfires, and nothing significant has happened newswise recently. Nothing is out of the ordinary. We are clueless, and its getting pretty bad. While I have been writing this, she has been sitting here, about 10 feet from me, staring out the back door, shaking and crying.

If anyone has any ideas on what has happened to her or what may be going on, please share, because we are stumped, and getting rather concerned.

consult a vetrenarian. or a spiritual medium, perhaps.

now that I think about it you might even need an exorcist!

Re: Something very strange is going on

Hmmm..well she got spooked real bad, thats for sure. I doubt even an animal would spook a dog this bad. I've never heard of a dog being spook like that for so long. Maybe you have ghosts! lol

Maybe theres some info online somewhere. Lets google this.

No, there really are pet psychologists.

Tim, do you have any neighbors that would be mean to her at all? Sometimes when a dog is treated very poorly by a person they'll become withdrawn like that. As far as anything else, I suggest taking it to a veteranarian as well, at least that way you can get a few answers.

Animal psychology is a huge field, however it's mainly research. A Pet Therapist, that's wrong. Though I suppose when airheads like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have nothing better to spend money on, a pet therapist makes a good moneypit.

I could see a pet psychologist open up shop in Beverly Hills and rake in the dough. Think I figure out what I wanna do for the rest of my life.

This is very true. Dogs are affected a lot more my people than other animals. My little brother owns a three year old Akita that's pretty fear-less when it comes to other animals. One night someone (probably one of my brothers friends) tried to break into his apartment while the dog was alone. She got so scared she shook for almost three days straight. Now she can't be left alone in the apartment because she starts to have dog-like panic attacks.

I agree with the rest, take her to a vet. You might also wanna try taking her for a walk and see if certain areas really scare her and investigate a little.

Re: Something very strange is going on

You may want to check the dog for any injuries, something you normally wouldnt look for. My dog did something similar and after a careful examination of the dog I discovered a pellet lodged in his right shoulder, not deep but enough to cause the dog pain. The what little bleeding there was had already stopped so we didnt even notice it. If you cant find anything I would suggest put the dog on a leash and go for a walk all over your yard any try to find a spot the dog will not go. Once you find the spot take a good look around for anything to give you a clue as to whats going on. Like ec437 said take your dog to a vet.

Re: Something very strange is going on

Alright, I just got off the phone with the vet because its gotten very bad. I dont think she slept at all last night, she woke me up every hour or so crying. And right around midnight, she started barking like mad. I thought someone might be outside, but when I looked, it was only a car driving by. This morning has been miserable. Ive been up for a half hour, and during that time, she has not gone more than 2 feet from me, lterally crying non-stop. She sitting on my lap now, and shes panting and shaking. The wierdest thing is, shes acting like someone is here, she just stares for a minute, then sniffs everything like mad. Then stares in another direction.

Kinda freaking me out.

Anyway, I would take her to the vet myself, but I cant drive anywhere. Ill have to talk to one of my parents when they get home. Thanks for the input guys, and if you have anything else, please, Im open to just about anything now.

And yes, there are dog psychologists

Re: Something very strange is going on

If she's afraid that someone might be there, I think someone might have been a bit too rough with her, but that's just me. I know you probably don't hit your dog, but raise a hand at her like you're going to and see how she reacts.
