Question Emissions Systems

Hi all..

I just picked up a '95 G20 today. its a really really nice car.. didnt realize how nice it was .. well.. some 83km after leaving the dealership the "Check Engine" light came on. The Owners manual says its Emission Control related. The cars got 174.000km on it. Any thoughts on what i could check? I bought one of those warrantees with the car. This ones from "Global Warranty". Would they cover something like this? The car does idle rather rough.. [you can feel it idleing from inside the car] but drives nicely.. yet the fuel ecomony isnt as good as id like. From the "Full" mark to the next line [3/4?] on the gauge.. it wasnt even 100 km. and im shifting at 3k. Anyway.. If someone knows of what i can check please let me know.. i havent even owned the car 24 hours yet and already the check engine light is on!

Thanks for your help
Bernard

if you rev the hard engine whilest at a stop, can you smell excess gas coming from your exhaust?? the reason being is that you say it could be emmisions related, im guessing it could be the lambda sensor giving the ECU an incorrect reading and basically running your car far too rich, ergo burning up all your gas.

Yep, the O2 sensor is most of the time the reason for bad gas mileage. Might want to get it replaced.

funny you should say that.. for the "safty" they replaced the front pipe.. is this wear the o2 is located on the G20? Whats an o2 go for? I was sitting in the car.. as it idled.. looking at the owners manual.. [i was trying to find out where the cd changer was as the stock stereo has the controls for one] when i noticed the idle went very rough.. when i looked up the "Check Engine" light was on.. Im not very impressed. but i suppose its better now then later. o2 sensor huh.. im going to check it out.. where is it located again? can i change it myself?

look on your exhaust manifold (header) it looks like a sparkplug sticking out of it with a wire behind it.

Hi G20 Fans..

Did some more testing to see what it might be.. let me know what you think.. im at half a tank of gas now.. and ive only traveled some 170km/105miles is this normal? I normally reached 300 by 1/2 tank in my daewoo.. So something is eating the fuel rather quickly..
The other thing i noticed. Travelling at 160km/h/100mph you can start to smell eggs.. im guessing this is from the CAT? and its the unburnt fuel? i slowed way down once i started to smell it..

Anyone also have a fix for a bouncy tach? it works fine.. then at about 25-3k it stops.. or after say 3 grand it goes to 2k and sits there.. after driving for a long while it will go as high as 4-5k but even then.. it would drop to 2k and sit there.. it works fine from 0-2500.. after 2500 it doesnt work to well.. i bought it from a place that had it sitting on the lot for a few months.

thanks for all your help. i look forward to more
Bernard

You're problem definitely sounds like an O2 to me. As for the Tach, take it in and let the warranty people worry about that!
