Re: rebuilding my sl engine.

Better off getting a TT engine from the start. They can handle that much boost easily. No need to tear the motor down either.

The twin turbo engine will actually drop you down in horsepower from 222 to about around 175. Reason being is the drop on compression ratio of the pistons. By dropping the compression ratio of the pistons, you are able to run higher boost on the motor, flowing in more air, and making more power without detonation.

whatever the VR4's are rated at...i think it is 300 or 320 bhp. anyways, it sounds like you are turning this into a very good performer. engine rebuilding is not all that expensive.

if someone can confirm this it would be great, but i am pretty sure the TT and n/a engine are the same motor except for the compression being changed?????????

so what you basically do, take your engine to a machine shop, buy new upgraded forged VR4 pistons, along with new upgraded VR4 rods, and ARP bolts and studs and whatever else the 3000gt motor needs to handle A LOT of power. most machine shops will cost around $500 to rebuild your block. at this point, you might want to go ahead and hand over your heads and have them port and polish those while rebuilding them with some upgrades springs and cams. this will probably cost you about an extra $200 for the head work. after all that is complete you can run whatever boost that your turbos can handle and with the new stiffer springs and cams you can probably go quite a bit further into the RPM range without losing effieciency....

so what i am trying to say is that you will have a virtually indestructable engine that can handle whatever your turbos can provide. of course you will need to upgrade your fuel system to supply enough fuel for the amount of air but you get the point...in the long run this could save you alot of money if you want to take your car that far anyways.... it all depends on how much money you have and what you want out of the car....

and the fun part about it is that it probably wont cost you that much more money to do this than to swap in a VR4 motor, considering what your getting out of the deal!!!

The TT has an extra set of oil squirters. Instead of going thru all that trouble he could keep his SL as is for the time being and buy and extra motor. Stock TT's can take 15 psi easily. Hell IPO on 3si had 18psi runs on a SL block with 10:1 compression and 158k miles. Of course he was running race gas but still.

yeah i figured as much with oil squirters...he could. i guess i got a little carried away when someone mentioned rebuilding a motor.

Back in July I wanted to do the same to my base model. I contacted my sponsors and they where willing to cover 55% of the total rebuilt, next I contacted 3sxperformance for the prices. Forged pistons, rods, cams, turbos, ECU, the works. I wanted a top-of-the-line quality engine. the total tally was $12000.00! yup 12 grand, next I figured I just use regular stock parts and built a block that wont blow up but not with the latest and greatest, $8000.00 including labor! for that bro just buy the 6G72TT and be done with it, I think the engine costs like $2500.00 and the turbos will probably run you another grand. I'm not sure I gave up on the idea a while back.

$8000, holy s***!!!!!

yeah but it seems that he already has the turbos but now he wants to run 15psi.

to rebuild his engine into TT spec with upgraded main parts would be about the same as buying a TT motor for $2500.

pistons - wiesco's run $600
rods- (not needed) Eagle H-Beams with ARP bolts run $450
bolts and studs - ARP's run like $50
engine rebuild with new bottom end parts - $500

total: $1600 give or take depending on how much the machine shop charges you...

while the machine shop is rebuilding the bottom end they can install the oil squirters, hone your exhaust manifolds and upper plenum for a little extra cash...

then you can still be under your $2500 by getting your heads rebuilt with OEM parts. i dont know how much cams run for the 3000gt...

there you got yourself a brand new virtually indestructible engine ready for you to max out your turbos!!! this is all if you alreayd ahve a TT setup on your SL. if you dont, look to be adding the turbos cost along with alot of extra necessary stuff.

like i said, it all depends on how much money your willing to spend.

the minimum requirements for it to work, after the motor, you'd have to make sure that you also have exhaust manifolds, turbos, precats and O2 housings, downpipe, intercoolers and intercooler piping, intake piping, all the turbo oil and coolant lines, bolts, and gaskets, at least a tt fuel pump and make sure you have at least tt injectors. If you use your N/A ECU and wiring harness, you'll have to get an s-afc or some type of fuel management, and still be careful because your engine timing will start to climb, so if you upgrade injectors past 360cc, then you'll have to get some type of device that can retard timing. If you choose not to go this route then you will need a TT ECU and TT wiring harness. You will also need a boost gauge and a boost controller so you know what your levels are. You will also need to cut a whole through the sheet metal where your drivers side intercooler goes. If you use your fwd tranny, you will need an upgraded clutch and some sort of LSD. You can go without both of these, but you'll fry your clutch real fast and you will risk blowing your differential through the bell housing, in which your transmission housing is ruined and you will have to get another transmission. I believe those are the minimum requirements, if anyone else has any input, feel free to chip in.

OMG! Thats crazy. All i want is vr-4 power without the insurance . So what kid of money am i gonna have to drop into this beast before my dream happens? Is their car shops that could set my engine up and everything u mentioned w/o screwing it up or forgetting something vidal? Do you recomend anything for this kind of job? such as converting to AWD while i'm at it or will that add a great ammount to the cost? "You will also need to cut a whole through the sheet metal where your drivers side intercooler goes."!?! is this noticable? Mine is automatic so i don't have to upgrade my clutch right?
That was vary shocking but great info thanks

meh turbos are ok, go all NA raise your compression and lower your stroke!! it'll be like a mini-f1 car.

Re: rebuilding my sl engine.

The NA has oil squirters on the rods (same rods in TT and NA)

If you want to run higher boost and or pump gas and not worry about higher boost go with the lowre comp TT pistons/engine.
