Unhappy Fuel filter replacement

Ok, so I've been having some start up problems and haven't really narrowed it down to anything yet. Last week I put some "gunk" brand stuff into the fuel tank to clean the fuel injectors and what not and that worked for a little bit but then I ended up with the same problem. I decided to try the spark plugs and the fuel filter, so now today I try to replace the fuel filter, have a heck of a time trying to get this thing off, I finally get it off (since I didn't know there was a tool to get it off with) and now I have a piece broken inside the 'in' fuel line...I'm unable to get the new filter on because I put the piece in the line and then I can easily pull it out, no 'click-in' noise heard. I find it hard to believe that I had such a hard time to get it off and then I can get the new one off and on so much easier now. I think I need a new clip for my 1992 Ford Explorer XLT for the 'in' fuel line, but don't really know how to search for that anywhere on Ford's website...does anyone really know the name of the piece?
