Irritating problem

Any advice would be helpful...

So the other morning I started my '93 zx600r to move it. It's been running about 25 degrees here around the time I get up. I didn't wait for it to warm up, I just moved it about 100 ft with the choke engaged. The next day I went to start my bike and it won't even act like it's going to ignite. If it were flooded it would clear within a half hour right? The carbs were recently rejetted, the motor rebuilt too. I even took the tank off to clear the fuel lines, as I was getting a heavy gas smell when trying to start the bike. I'm thinking possibly fouled plugs? Oh yeah, I forgot... if I try to start the bike with the choke engaged, it shoots a large flame out of the exhaust, and emits quite a loud and disturbing backfire. I'm relatively new to bike mechanics so please help!

if your getting flamage then your not getting correct spark.
pull the plugs and check for spark or foulage. my blade had similar symptoms with only 500k's on the clock. had it transported to the dealer and all he did was jump start it and rev the crap out of it to clean it out. then replaced the plugs

It sounds like one of your floats might be stuck open on your carburator and it is flooding one of the cylinders. Check your site window on your oil level. Does it now look overfilled? If you open the oil cap, do you get a strong smell of gas, or can you smell gas in general around the bike? (If the oil level looks overfilled, do not try and start the bike as you may experience hydraulic lock and bend a rod.) The overfilling or gas smell in the oil will confirm gas is getting by the cylinders and into the crankcase....leading you to having to give the carbs cleaning. I had the same problem on my 1990 ZX6...with the flame and backfire. If you want to confirm which carb is the culprit, pull the tank off, pull the carb bank off and the cylinder intake where the boot connects with the leaky carb will be filled with gas.

Yeah... replaced all four plugs... runs like a champ. Thanks for the help.

You will have problems again. All you did was get it to start by using the dry plugs. It will eventually sit again and flood itself. It should not have flooded itself that much the first time to cause the problem. Clean your carbs to make sure you don't run into problems again.
